The 2007–08 Celtics Championship Season. After missing the playoffs two years in a row, Celtics management decided to make some aggressive moves. First, on June 28th, they traded a first round draft pick, along with Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West, to the Seattle SuperSonics for All-Star Ray Allen and the 35th overall selection.
Then, on July 31st, the Celtics traded for 10-time All-Star and 2004 MVP Kevin Garnett in the single largest trade for one player in NBA history. In exchange for Garnett, the Celtics sent to the Timberwolves Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Theo Ratliff, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, their 2009 first-round draft pick, the return of Minnesota's conditional first-round draft pick previously obtained in the 2006 Ricky Davis-Wally Szczerbiak trade, and cash.
Garnett and Ray Allen along with All-Star Paul Pierce, would form the nucleus of the 2007-08 Celtics. They finished the year with a 66–16 record posting the best single-season turnaround in NBA history, improving their previous season record by 42 wins.
Their road to the NBA Finals included wins over the Atlanta Hawks (4-3), the Cleveland Cavaliers (4-3) and the Detroit Pistons (4-2). The Celtics went on to defeat Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers four games to two in the championship series. This was Boston's first title since 1986 and their 17th overall.
For the post-season, Garnett, Pierce and Allen averaged 20.4,19.7 and 15.6, respectively. Garnett was named the 2007-08 Defensive Player of the Year, and Danny Ainge, who executed "the most dramatic NBA turnaround ever", was named NBA Executive of the Year.
