Super Bowl XXXIII. On January 31, 1999, the AFC Champion Denver Broncos met the NFC's Atlanta Falcons at Pro Player Stadium in Miami, Florida. This was the Broncos second straight Super Bowl appearance coming right on the heels of their 31-24 Super Bowl XXXII upset victory over the Green Bay Packers. The victory marked the Broncos' first Super Bowl win coming after four previous Super Bowl losses. For the Falcons, this was the first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.
The Broncos defense limited the Falcons to two first half field goals while Denver scored two touchdowns, one on an 80 yard pass play from John Elway to Rod Smith. Jason Elam added a 26 yard field goal to make the score 17-6 as they headed to the lockers. After a scoreless third quarter, the Broncos, aided by two interceptions by Darrien Gordon, scored two touchdowns upping the score to 31-6. The Falcons added two fourth quarter touchdowns, one on a 94 yard Tim Dwight kickoff return, but came up short as the Broncos won 34-19. At 38 years old, Denver quarterback John Elway became the oldest player ever to be named Super Bowl MVP. He retired on May 2 before the following season. Here are Elway's Super Bowl MVP stats.¹
