Super Bowl XLI LogoSuper Bowl XLI. Squaring off in Super Bowl XLI were the American Football Conference champion Indianapolis Colts and the National Football Conference champion Chicago Bears. For both teams, the appearance spelled the end of long Super Bowl droughts. The Colts hadn't appeared in the big game since 1970 when they still dwelled in Baltimore. The Bears hadn't been back to the big show since winning Super Bowl XX in 1985.

This teams met on February 4, 2007, at Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. It was only the second time that two pre-expansion era teams met in the Super Bowl. The first was Super Bowl XIV between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Los Angeles Rams. Also, if one counts the histories of several other franchises as part of that of the Colts, this game would be the first Super Bowl between two NFL charter members from 1920, as the Colts' earliest ancestor, the Dayton Triangles, were part of the league's inaugural season along with the team that became the Chicago Bears, the Decatur Staleys (the only other possible Super Bowl match-up under this criteria would be between the Colts and the Arizona Cardinals).

Though the game opened inauspiciously with Devin Hester running back the opening kick off 92 yards for a touchdown, the Colts overcame a 14-6 first quarter deficit to outscore their opponent 23-3 in the last three quarters and take the game 29-17.

Among the stellar performances for the Colts were Dominic Rhodes' 113 yards rushing on 21 carries with a touchdown. Joseph Addai had 77 rushing yards on 19 carries, plus 66 yards on 10 receptions. Reggie Wayne had two receptions, one for a 53 yard TD. Marvin Harrison had 5 receptions for 59 yards; Dallas Clark, 4 receptions for 36 yards. Quarterback Peyton Manning was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Some experts were critical of the choice, but sometimes the key to winning is not losing and Manning did a great job of not losing. Below are Manning's Super Bowl stats.¹
